First off – huge congrats on your little one! Whether you're still counting down the days or you've just had your baby, you're in the right place if you're thinking about newborn photos. I know the idea of a newborn session might feel a bit overwhelming – you’re sleep-deprived, figuring out feeds, and trying to remember the last time you had a hot cup of tea. But I promise, it’s so worth it – and I’m here to make it easy and stress-free.
One of my absolute favourite moments to capture during a newborn session is what I like to call the "mug shots." Now, don’t worry – we’re not talking police line-ups here! These are those sweet, simple, awake portraits where your baby is lying on a plain background, looking right at (or near!) the camera, and just being themselves.
But wait – isn’t newborn photography all about sleepy babies?
Yes, those dreamy, curled-up, snoozy shots are lovely – and we’ll absolutely get them! But here's the thing: when your baby is awake and alert, that's when we often catch those little glimpses of personality that are so them. Maybe it’s a wide-eyed stare, a wrinkly forehead, a cheeky little pout, or that hilarious confused expression babies are famous for. These tiny "mug shots" are raw, real, and ridiculously adorable.
You see, babies don’t come with big personalities overnight – they’re born with them. And those awake moments give us a peek into who they are. It’s amazing how many parents tell me their baby still makes that same face months down the line. Those mug shots become such a special keepsake.
I’ve never done a newborn session – what should I expect?
If this is your first time, don't worry at all. You don’t need to prep or pose – I’ll guide you through everything. Sessions are relaxed, baby-led, and designed to be as stress-free as possible. Whether your baby is awake, sleepy, wriggly, or even a little grumpy – we’ll roll with it and capture beautiful, natural images that reflect this fleeting stage.
And the best part? These awake mug shot-style images are often some of the most treasured.
